Intent-Based Leaders show new employees support. Here, David suggests questions to ask on the first day.
I got a question the other day from a keynote presentation that I’d never seen before and loved it. It was “What would be the first question you would ask a new employee?”
So – first of all – asking questions – I like it! New employee . . . It kind of depends maybe on the seniority and where the person is coming in. But I would ask something along the lines of: “What are your aspirations? What are you trying to achieve here? Where do you see yourself and then how can I help you achieve those aspirations?”
You’re trying to get a sense of how much authority and autonomy the person wants. What’s important to them? Is it financial gain? Is it flexibility? Is that having an impact?
And then you’re setting yourself up as a supporter right away for what that person is trying to achieve with their life. So – “What are your aspirations? What are you trying to achieve?” Something along those lines would be one of the first questions I would ask or the first question.
