The prefrontal cortex is the area of the brain where rational thinking, goal oriented behavior and emotion control happen. The problem with the prefrontal cortex is that it can only focus on one thing at a time.
So, when you’re stressed, when you’re tired, hungry or thirsty, it’s hard for your prefrontal cortex to function optimally. It’s overloaded.
So, rather than continuing to try to focus on the activity that’s requiring all your brain power, take a break. Get some rest.
Getting rest and refueling allows your prefrontal cortex to get the energy it needs so that when you get back to that cognitive task, you’re more efficient and more focused.
So, the next time you’re feeling a little overloaded, take a break. Your prefrontal cortex will thank you for it.
