Leadership Nudge – FIX THE ENVIRONMENT, NOT PEOPLE
I believe that every human has the potential to do great. We all have a latent superhero within. All too often, however, that superhero never sees the light of day because of fear, bureaucracy, or insecurities we carry with us.
Here’s the leader-leader challenge: What if, by the way we treated each other, by the way we talked to each other, we created environments that coaxed that superhero to action—not ordered it to action—but simply made it easier for people to embrace their inner superheroes? In many cases this means removing the fear most of us live with: fear of embarrassment; fear of failure; fear of getting fired. It means creating environments free from fear that instead are safe for that inner superhero to be summoned forth.
My leadership nudge to you this week is this:
Think back to something that didn’t go the way you wanted it to in terms of how your team behaved. Think about what you can do as a leader to change the environment to make the behavior you want easier for your people.
