Leadership Nudge® 359 – Fix the Environment: Remove Obstacles

August 4, 2021by Sandy Wilmer

Fixing the environment for your team involves removing obstacles that get in the way of people being able to do their jobs. What do you see in your own environment that might be getting in the way of people being able to do their jobs? How can you fix the environment, not your people?

Well, here in Scotland, we do get quite a lot of rain. And the impact of that can be that on a hillside like this, we can see landslides happening. And when a landslide happens, it blocks this path, which is used by long walkers and cyclists. It used to be an old road. So this construction is designed to stop land moving down and to keep the path clear.

What does that mean, in terms of work? Well, I guess keeping the path clear is similar to the job of leaders in terms of removing the obstacles that get in the way of people being able to do their jobs. So the role of a leader is about fixing the environment, of creating a workplace where people are able to get on and do their best and use their intellectual capability and knowledge to best effect.

So my nudge to you this week is what do you see in your own environment that might be getting in the way of people being able to do their jobs properly? How can you fix the environment, not your people?

I’m Peter, Russian, here in Scotland, and this is your weekly Leadership Nudge.
