Cell phones are awesome. They allow us to do things like keep track of our calendars, capture images, access the Internet, and maintain constant communication. When I am away from my team I can stay in touch 24 hours a day. That doesn’t mean I should. I just spent some time in the Great Smokey Mountains and I turned my phone off. Cutting that tie allowed my team to be independent and allowing my team to be independent fosters their growth.
So here’s your nudge, turn your phone off.
Turn it off for an evening.
Turn it off for the weekend.
Turn it off for the whole week.
Work up to those bigger times. That will gradually move your team from dependence to independence.
