Leadership Nudge™ – LEADERS LISTEN
One of the most important things a leader must do is listen. This week, Wendy Qian from Kardex Remstar shares some incredible insight about listening.
Wendy showed us the Chinese character for “listen.” She identified the embedded meaning for each part of the character. “This part,” pointing to the left half of the character, “is your ear. To listen, first you need to use your ear. It’s a voice, it’s inevitable, you must listen first.”
“This part,” she continued, “is your eyes. When listening you are not only using your ears, you also use your eyes.” This is how we detect body languages. Seeing how another person communicates, helps us to grasp the full meaning of the information exchange.
“And then,” she showed, “finally you use your heart.” She likened the encounter to a train passing by. If we only use our ears and eyes and not our heart, it’s like a train passing. We hear it, we see it, but we don’t grasp any meaning. It’s not an efficient way to listen. “In the very end,” Wendy shared, “you must use your heart to listen to really remember what you have heard and seen. Then, it is efficient listening.”
Our Leadership Nudge to you this week is this:
When listening, use not only your ears, but your eyes and heart as well.
Let us know what how it goes!
