Leadership NudgeTM – Create the Perfect Team
So what makes a team good? What are the characteristics of a good team? Google has been studying this for the last two years. It turns out that how the team interacts is more important than who is on the team. We have been having the “get the right people on the bus in the right seats” conversation for years. Yes, that does matter, but what matters more is how the team interacts. Do we interrupt each other? Do we hog the spotlight? Do we encourage each other? Do we criticize each others ideas? Do we show up on time? These are the kinds of things that matter the most, the “Team Dynamics.”
Google came up with five aspects of team dynamics.
Number one is psychological safety. Does it feel safe to be on the team? Can I take risks?
Number two is dependability.
Number three is structure and clarity. In other words, it actually helps to have a good definition about what I own for my job.
Number four is the impact of the work.
Number five is the meaning of my work.
