Providing information, not instruction, is a better way to give feedback. I received a great story from someone who was taking tango dancing lessons. And the instructor was telling them “Turn me harder” or “Turn me softer,” giving instruction. And they changed it so that she would provide feedback on a scale where 5 was the perfect turn and 6 and up was too strong, 4 and down was too weak .It worked great, and it’s providing information, not instruction. And it’s giving autonomy to the student. So we say provide information, not instruction. It’s a better way to give feedback because it enables and invites autonomy in people. I’m David Marquet.
